Visitors are invited to visit Shallenberger State Nature Preserve on Friday, September 5 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. for a nighttime hike. This hike will take you to the top of Allen Knob where you will learn about the history of the area and preserve. As you climb, adjust your sight and hearing to the sounds of the woodland at night. Make sure to wear appropriate clothing for the weather and sturdy shoes for hiking.
At Shallenberger, the long process of weathering produced Allen Knob, a promontory of highly resistant sandstone, and the smaller adjacent Ruble Knob. Allen Knob towers 240 feet above the surrounding countryside and provides an impressive vista of the central Ohio lowland plains to the west.
Shallenberger State Nature Preserve is located at 2470 Beck’s Knob Road Lancaster, OH 43130 in Fairfield County. To arrive at Shallenberger State Nature Preserve from Lancaster, travel State Route 22 west for approximately 3.2 miles. Then, turn right (north) onto Beck’s Knob Road (just before US 33 overpass) and travel about 0.2 miles to the paved parking lot.
