After an extremely early start, spring wildflower season is creeping along slowly around the state. In southern Ohio, several species are just beginning to bloom. The forest floor is greening up and a few blooms are present in the central part of the state, but northern Ohio is still relatively quiet.
It’s difficult to believe our Ohio wildflower season has begun for 2017! Skunk cabbage, our earliest bloomer, was open and receptive to pollinators in late January. Volunteers spotted our second bloomer, harbinger-of-spring, in Highland County on February 11! We typically see this species blooming in late February and early March.
