Wildflower Bloom Report

2017 Spring Wildflower Season Has Begun

Posted on 2/21/2017 by State Nature Preserves
It’s difficult to believe our Ohio wildflower season has begun for 2017! Skunk cabbage, our earliest bloomer, was open and receptive to pollinators in late January. Volunteers spotted our second bloomer, harbinger-of-spring, in Highland County on February 11! We typically see this species blooming in late February and early March.

With 60-degree high temperatures in the forecast for the next week, spring beauty, hepatica, and others will be emerging from the ground and unfurling their delicate petals across southern Ohio. Northern Ohio, which has seen more snowfall than the southern and central parts of the state should follow just a few weeks behind. Check back with us in early March as we report weekly on the conditions of Ohio’s spring wildflower bloom. Reports will be released each Friday to help plan your weekend.
